Dr. George Summers Memorial Scholarship
Dr. George Summers passed away on Monday, June 26, 2017. After completing his Ph.D. in accounting from the University of Houston in 2003, he served as a software applications consultant for SAP Public Services, Inc. and the U.S. Army Logistics Modernization Program. Dr. Summers joined the SU accounting faculty in fall 2006. During his tenure at SU, he taught individual and corporate taxation, accounting information systems, and MBA managerial accounting. He also was very actively engaged in the process of incorporating new technologies (e.g. SAP, XBRL) into the classroom. George was a strong team player for the department, whether it was to assist with a special service need, alter his teaching schedule to accommodate others, or to ante up financially to support a gift for an administrative assistant or support a colleague raising funds for a charity. He gave his time freely to students and was well liked by his colleagues. Perhaps most illustrative of his dedication to his students was the effort he made to educate them while in the hospital in Philadelphia undergoing treatment for a serious illness. While going through bone marrow treatments, he worked diligently to develop online teaching videos that he sent to his students to watch as lectures. He developed several of these videos and was actually able to keep his classes current while he recuperated from his illness. He will long be remembered for his gentle nature, congenial attitude, and generosity.
Dr. Summers made an enormous impact on many students over the years as a teacher, a mentor and as a friend. Make your gift today to honor his impact on so many lives throughout his career. You gift, whatever the size, will make a difference.
